Goal:
Provide support to ethnic minority high-school students in Sapa region through scholarships to help them get into Universities.
Background:
Sapa is a beautiful mountain area in the far north of Vietnam, on the borderline to China.
Vietnam has a relatively well functioning education system, especially on the lower levels.
However, the ethnic minorities, especially in these mountain areas in the north are lagging behind in the development and among this group there are a high level of illiteracy. Due to old customs and traditional gender stereotypes; youth – and especially girls have little support and means for taking higher education.
Sapa has today only 1- one registered business entity owned by an ethnic minority (Black H´mong).
Status:
The program has been carried out based on a yearly agreement between CEDS and Interhands for 6 years, with the following activity level:
